Trout fishing is more technique and method than luck. If you never fished the big waters or the serenity of a cool gentle stream, you might be a bit intimated with fishing all together. But trust me; anyone can learn to become an expert fisherman rather quickly. Even the hardest river trout fishing environments can be mastered in a matter of weeks or months.

Trout Fishing Games And Behavior

It may seem like a game to those first starting out, but I can tell you from years of experience it is pure science that will lead you to becoming an expert. There are countless species of fish in the Trout family. Probably more than you care to know about.

What you do want to focus on is the kind of trout you will fish. Not all trout are alike. They all have their different behaviors, characters and eating habits. It only takes a few minutes searching Google to find out the kind of trout in your area and where to find them.

Often times I will over-hear someone say "Their playing games or the fish are playing with me." What the fisherman did not understand, is the trout are only exhibiting their unique behavior and at the same time exploiting the fisherman's lack of trout knowledge. Contrary to popular belief, trout are not dumb and have really good eyesight. They can see you better than you can see them.

For example, if a person were to find out their local stream was populated with Brook and Rainbow trout, then fishing these two trout the same way will result in little success. In the same instance you would not hunt a bear the same way you would hunt a whale. Doing this would result in no bear or whale. To become an expert fisherman, understanding the kind of trout fished is the key to your success.

Fishing Gear

No matter what you hear when starting out, do not go out and buy professional gear. It will not help you become a better fisherman. All you will be doing is spending a lot of money for nothing. Gear is made to enhance your skills and not to teach you technique. Yet many still go out and buy the best most expensive gear only to be disappointed. Learn technique first and then add gear to enhance your good technique.

Using professional gear right out of the gate will make it that much harder to master your skills. You will spend most of your time trying to master the gear instead of your technique.

With that said, you want to start with a regular #5 fly rod. Even if you hear the stream you are fishing needs a lighter rod, stick with this one to start with. As you become surer of yourself and master the fly technique, then start to expand your understanding of the different rods to perfect your approach.

You may have seen a few sporting goods stores in your days and been amazed at the choices. It can make your head spin with all the colors, sizes, brands etc. Don't get too dazzled by the guarantees on the boxes and packages. And by all means stay away from the magical promises of Superbait. Superbait does work, but only in the right environments. Learn the basics first to have a better understanding, and then expand.

Stick with the information you have acquired in your research. If the research leads to you a particular bait, insect, fly etc. then stick with that and avoid buying something that may not work. It is OK to have a few kinds of lures, bait etc., but don't go overboard.
