Bjj Belts Ranking for Kids and Adults

Origins of the BJJ Kimonos - By: shakib nassiri.

Just as the now officially recognized sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu originated from Japan, from the Gracie brothers, after a large immigrant population of Japanese arrived in Brazil, the Gi worn for the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu originated from the Japanese Kimono.

A kimono is a traditional article of clothing worn by Japanese, by both men and women. The Kimono is a T shaped garment, which is designed to be wrapped around the body, with loose sleeves and legs. The Bjj Kimono is a version taken from this very traditional Japanese article, as is the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu founded from the ancient Japanese art of Judo.

How the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono differs from the Kimono worn for Judo is in the sleeving and legs. As well as being a two piece garment, the Kimono is still a T shape when laid out flat, with lapels at either side of the upper part.

As Brazilian Jiu Jitsu concentrates heavily on ground work and grappling techniques, the legs, cuffs and sleeving of the BJJ Kimonos are significantly tighter than that of the traditional Kimono used for Judo.

The weave of the cloth also differs from that of the Japanese Kimono used fro Judo, as it must be tough, as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a sport that essentially concentrates on ground techniques, grappling, holds and chokes, a material that is soft and does not impede movement being necessary. The cuffs and ankles are much tighter on the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono than on that of a traditional Judo Kimono, as open legged garments could proof dangerous, is not fatal when practicing the art of floor grappling, the opponent possibly trapping his leg inside the leg of that of his opponent.

To the untrained eye, when we think of martial arts such ads karate, Judo, Taekwondo or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, all Kimonos or Gis will look incredibly similar. But when we take a close look at the weaves and the weight of the garment, we can see significances, in the case of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono, especially in the detail of the cuffs and collar, the Kimono being based on the T shape of the traditional Japanese garment, but with many differences such as in the weight and durability of the fabric used, the Jiu Jitsu kimono or Gi being available in single and double weaves.

The origins of the Bjj Kimono and the care of are very interesting, as the traditional kimonos were actually unstitched each time they were required for washing. This still applies today to some Japanese Kimonos that are used only for special occasions such as family celebrations or weddings. When we talk about a Kimono in sport terminology, we need to look for a Kimono that is in an easy to wash and dry fabric, most people who practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on a serious level owning at least two Kimonos or Gis, allowing one to be washed whilst the other is being worn.

How to Tie Bjj Belts - By: shakib nassiri.

How to tie a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt, as in other sports that fall under the category of martial arts, such as Judo and Taekwondo, it is rather like, and could be compared to riding a bicycle. At first it looks complicated, but once you know how, you will never forget, being able to tie your Jiu Jitsu belt correctly in just seconds.

It is important for the parents of youngsters who practice martial arts such as Jiu Jitsu or Taekwondo to know how to tie a belt, so they can aid their child when they are changing into their uniform or Jiu Jitsu Gi. Martial art such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Taekwondo are recommended from a very young age, as they teach not just self defense, but self discipline, giving youngsters an aim in life, and targets they which to reach. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has junior and senior belts, further encouraging youngsters as young as three years old to take up the sport.

On the Internet you can find videos with instructions as to how to tie your Bjj belts, which may aid you as well as written instructions, as watching someone else whilst you tie your own, or your youngster's belt can be helpful.

Firstly, make sure that you are wearing your Gi correctly. The lapels of the top half should always hang outside the trousers, the trousers reaching a few centimeters off the ground. Once we have our Gi correctly positioned, we must pick up our belt in front of us, and hold it against our waist, with equal lengths to each side, left to dangle to the floor. Wrap both ends around the back of your body tightly, but not too tight to become uncomfortable. Now with the two ends in our hands, we must make the knot to secure the belt. There are some slight variations, but generally, the following applies:

With one end of the belt in each hand, cross the ends of the belt in front of you, firstly the left side, followed by the right hand side. The end of the belt that you now find in your left hand must be tucked under both layers of the belt. This action secures the belt, and the pulling of the ends now is all that is necessary to tighten and secure fully your belt, making a knot in the belt by bending over the belt and securing it through the loop you have made. It may seem complicated at first, but after a few trial runs, you will be able to do it with your eyes closed! So now you are ready to participate in your chosen sport, with your correctly fitting Gi and BJJ Belts, tied like a true professional. We must pride ourselves in our appearance when we take part in Jiu Jitsu, and a correctly fitting Gi and a correctly tied belt make ourselves smart, and ready for action, putting us in the correct frame of mind, focused and ready.

How to Choose a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi - By: shakib nassiri.

To the untrained eye, a uniform for any martial art sport such as Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, or Jiu Jitsu may all look the same, or be variations on the same theme. But there are actually differences between the different uniforms, and it is recommended that if you are going to take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a serious pastime or sport, that you buy a correctly fitting Gi.

If you have a youngster who is full of energy and excitement to take up the sport, you may, if you have one at hand, use a uniform that is actually intended for Judo or Taekwondo. Once convinced that their dedication is not a passing phase, the correct Gi is essential.

The difference between for example a karate uniform and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, is that the arms and legs are a lot tighter, as in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a lot of floor grappling techniques are used, and this could be dangerous, if a wide fitting karate or Judo uniform is worn.

BJJ Gis come in a great variety of colors, although when we think of martial arts, we generally think of a white uniform, in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, blue is also both standard, accepted, and very common. There are also huge ranges of other colors available, but officially recognized Gis are either blue or white.

BJJ Gis has to be made of a strong material, as when using floor grappling techniques and locks, others materials could rip easily. Gis are fabricated both in single and double weave, the double weave being more durable, but obviously heavier, causing increased sweating. If you live in a hot climate, a single weave Gi is the obvious choice, even though it may not last a long. A double weave would be both to hot, as well as impeding flexibility.

If you attend a martial arts school, there may well be in place a standard issue Gi, if not they will recommend the best stockiest to you. Gis have sizes for small children to large adults. Giving your measurements to a stockiest will enable them to supply you with the correct fitting Gi. The amount you spend on your Gi is again, entirely up to you. If it is for a child, a cheaper Gi would be recommended, as the child will inevitably grow. For an adult, if you professionally train or fight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is worth while spending that little extra to get a top quality and durable Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi.

The basic rules of thumb are to buy your BJJ Gi in either blue or white, as these are the two officially accepted colors, and to purchase from a stockiest, giving your measurements, or taking advice from your martial arts school. Then choose your weave, and finally, once purchased, make sure you care for your Gi properly, washing it after each training session, in cold or luke warm water, and hanging it to dry immediately, making it clean and reading for your next session.

How to care for your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi - By: shakib nassiri.

Like all our items of everyday clothing have instructions or recommendations as to temperature guidelines, use or not of beach, and tumble drying etc, it is important that we take extra care of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, just as we would any item of our favorite clothing.

When caring for our BJJ Gis, it is not sufficient just to put it in the washing machine with our normal clothes wash, especially if our chosen Gi is white in color, we cannot afford to accidentally dye it to another color, or a shade of grey. Our Gi should be washed after each training session, as the sport involved a lot of floor work and ground grappling techniques, and we sweat a lot when practicing the sport. If our chosen Gi is white, any dirt will show very soon, and part of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi is the art of order and self discipline, and we must discipline ourselves to take adequate care of out BJJ Gis.

It is not recommended to use bleach when washing our Gi, even though this may give us rapid white results, bleaching can be very damaging to the fabric. A substitute to bleach can be vinegar, which aids in the removal of staining. As the Gi is traditionally made of double weave or thick fabrics, and we sweat a lot when training, it is essential to wash our Gi straight after a training session. The worst thing we can possibly do is leave our Gi in a sports bag where it will harbor the growth of bacteria.

Although there are now light weight version of Gis available, the traditional double weave garment takes some time to dry, and must be line dried, preferably in the sun, which aids in the removal of any lingering bacteria. When we regularly train, we will inevitably need more than one GI, so we always have one clean, ready for our next training session.

It is recommended to machine wash separately our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi, washing a maximum of two Gis in one load, giving the garment much room for movement in the machine. Use a warm, but not hot temperature. We should avoid the temptation to wash our Gi at high temperature in the aim to get rid of stains. Traditional Gi s and Kimonos were always washed by hand, in cold water, but advances in the fabrics now allow them to be machine washed, but on a delicate cycle.

If we notice our BJJ Gi is stained, we can rub some solid soap, or vinegar onto the stain before machine washing. This should be done immediately after removing the garment, so as the stain is not given time to dry in. With these few essential tips, you should always have a Gi in perfect conditions for your next training session or competition, a cool machine wash, and then hung to dry immediately in direct sun light, eliminating bacteria, and giving us the perfect result.

Jiu Jitsu Gear You Need - By: shakib nassiri.

When you first start out in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you would excited to learn the new martial art and be fearful of how hurt you may get while training. You also would not know what type of Jiu Jitsu Gear you may need to train in this sport. Well, what most people would recommend even though there has been some controversy because of Eddie Bravos No Gi movement is to strictly train in a Bjj Gi at least at first. With the Bjj Gi you could enhance your game in many ways and develop many techniques you would not be able to do training in no Gi. So the Bjj Gi is the most essential Jiu Jitsu Gear you would need to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Now the Jiu Jitsu Gi is not the only Jiu Jitsu Gear you will need to train even though it is the most important. Of course, you would also need your Bjj belts and since this would be your first time training you would need to purchase a Bjj white belt. Keep in mind, that in Jiu Jitsu, the Submission Bjj Gi and Bjj Belts are the best. Depending on where you purchase your Bjj Gi and Bjj belts from and what brand your Bjj Kimonos could cost you anywhere from $70 - $250. To be honest, they are all pretty much the same with minor differences. So paying over $200 for a Bjj Gi is just ludicrous. In fact, even paying over $150 would be insane for a simple Jiu Jitsu Gi. The best price for your most essential Jiu Jitsu gear would have to be any where from $75 - $125. As far as your Bjj belts prices range from $10 - $20, which all of the Bjj belts are really the same, unless they are made of different material so just go for the $10 Bjj belts. You don’t need to make this new hobby of yours cost you a fortune. So now that we got the Bjj Gi and the Bjj belts part of this down let’s move on to rash gaurds.

The next most important piece of Jiu Jitsu Gear you must have would be a rash guard. They are beneficial to help evaporate sweat so that your sweat doesn’t stay on your body 2 long. And they also help keep diseases off of you that your opponents may have. I mean they sweat on you they seldom even bleed on you and you don’t want that on your skin, so you would want protection to use a rash guard. Sublimated rash guards are the best. So be sure you wear a rash guard under your Bjj Gi during your next training session to help protect yourself from ring worm, staff and other diseases. When it comes to your Bjj Gi pants I would always recommend get the pants with a rope style draw string because it will help your pants from falling off. Very important and often overlooked Jiu Jitsu gear you would need.

Progression of your Bjj Belts in Jiu Jitsu - By: shakib nassiri.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art which is performed on the ground and is also a means of self defense. This particular art was taken from the Japanese martial art of judo in the 20th century and thus was thus modified to make this art.

It was Maeda, Japanese who set out to spread the art of judoka all over the world, incepted the art of this martial art when he was on his tour. A businessman sponsored for him and got him established. The children of this businessman were the expert learner of this art and then became undisputed champions. They are known to be the founders of this art and thus named it after their country of Brazil and thus it is known as a Brazilian art.

While this is one of the best forms of martial arts, you have to work hard and with determination to be able to learn the art. It takes years of hard practice to perform the art without mistakes and getting hurt. This is an art which also teaches the weak and the small physique people to defend them against the strong with a mere use of technique.

The progression of the BJJ Belts happens at a very steady pace. The person should learn each level of the art to acquire the belts and also be the finest performer to gain the biggest belt, the black belt in this art. There are different belts given to juniors and seniors. Each level has a different color belt which is given to the learner when he achieves that level of training. This art has now been made world famous and many competitions take place of this art. It is a much liked game in Brazil but is also played in many countries where martial arts are encouraged.

Bjj is a form of the art which is slightly different from Japanese Jiu Jitsu. However, there are many things that are common among the two forms. Bjj Belts are given to signify the levels of learning in both these forms. The same system of grading belts is used. There are many schools of martial arts which have been opened to specially teach the Bjj Kimonos and also schools which teach other forms of martial arts along with this form.

The progression of the Bjj belts happen when one learns a higher level of the art and is more skilled in the art of performing it. There are open competitions held for this purpose and even titles are given to the champions. This shows that the art is wide spread among many countries. However, this art should not be performed beyond a particular number of times. It should be learnt only from a certified training coach who has been approved by the authorities of the country. A lot of care should be taken while performing this art. The art should not be tried without supervision for the first as the movements dine is a wrong way can affect the body adversely.

Importance of Bjj Belts - By: shakib nassiri.

A wise man once said, “A black belt is simply a white belt who never stopped training”. This quote is very true and became very inspirational to many individuals which increases the importance of Bjj Belts. Now getting your Bjj belts in Jiu Jitsu is not as easy as it may be for other martial arts such as karate, hapkido or even judo. In fact, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the hardest martial art to obtain your black belt in since it takes typically about 10 or so years. In most other martial arts you can get your black belt anywhere from 6 months to 4 years; Nowhere near as long as it takes to get your black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. So you should all understand this and how this makes the importance in your bjj belts and the high honor it is to have your black belt in this great martial art.

There are two ways or two systems that every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school goes by when it comes to their BJJ belts and how they promote their students. One option would be to simply promote people one belt at a time from white all the way to black. And the second option would be to award people with stripes along the way from one belt to another to track your progress and keep students motivated. Every school is different, and one system may not be better than the next. So first, we will discuss a little bit more about the stripe system and how this works. There are 5 stripes to be given per each Bjj belt your sixth stripe would be your new belt. If you are wondering where the stripes are put well, take out your Jiu Jitsu belt and look at the opposite end of where the logo of the belt is attached and there should be a black sleeve at the end, red colored if you’re a black belt. If your belt does not have a black or red sleeve at the end than it is not a true Bjj belt and I recommend you get a new belt. For example, if you are a white belt your instructor will eventually give you 5 stripes which you could put on the sleeve of your belt and when you get your fifth stripe you would know your very close to your blue belt. Now that you know how the system works a bit you could decide if this would be the best system or the following system we are going to explain.

The next system, is the more basic traditional system where you simply promote your students in Bjj from one Jiu Jitsu belt to another without using any sort of track able progress between Bjj belt promotions. This style may leave your curiosity open and keep you working harder toward your new belt. This way could also make you forget about the whole belt system because that is not as important as you actually learning the true martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Training in your Bjj Gi, you know that your Bjj Belts promotions are very important and you will stick to the training to progress to your ultimate goal of your black belt. Is the promotion of your Bjj belts important to you?

First Day of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training - By: shakib nassiri.

When you first start out in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you may be very nervous to find out how your training will go the first day. Be sure that you have bought your first Bjj Gi before you go to your first class. On your first Bjj Gi you should not spend a penny over $100 for this because there are many quality Bjj Kimonos at a very affordable price. The higher priced ones are just priced higher because of their brands. I would also recommend you wear a rash guard your first day as well under your Jiu Jitsu Gi. Be sure to have your white bjj belts on as well.

Now that you got your Jiu Jitsu gear ready to go you may be nervous about others hurting your or acting tough. Well let me assure you Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is different than boxing or other martial arts because Bjj is a very humble sport. You will quickly notice on your first day of training that no one is there to hurt you or act tough but rather people will be helping you learn your basic moves. The more you train in the same place you will notice you will develop many long term friendships as well. Also never in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament has there been a fight that has broken out where people actually fight to hurt each other. So no need to be afraid of training. Many people also think on their first day that they have to try really hard and use all of their energy to beat their opponent. What I recommend again would be to not use to much energy or force but just simply try to practice the basic techniques they teach you the first day such as the hip escape. Don’t worry at all if someone taps you out and don’t worry too much about how many people you can tap out. Jiu Jitsu is a humble sport. As you progress with your Bjj belts you will become more aware of the sport. Again, on your first day be sure to not stress too much on what other people do and please do not bring your ego to the Bjj mat. It will just piss people off and cause people to hate you in the academy and I’m sure you don’t want these trained martial artist disliking you. So be humble, go to learn and make friends. Be sure to keep consistent as consistency is the key when it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Beginning - By: shakib nassiri.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be classified alongside the sports of Judo and Taekwondo, being a martial art and combat sport. As well as being used for the art of self defense, it is great in character building in the young person, giving them a focus and aim in life.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is said to have come about due to a large immigrant population of Japanese in Brazil, its' invention being a relatively new one, in the twentieth century. It is derived form the Japanese martial art of Judo, and although is very similar in many aspects, ranking being gained by dans and belts, it sets itself aside from Judo by being a sport that is more focused on ground fighting.

The main focus of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the capability to grapple your opponent to the ground, locking them into a position from which they are unable to move, regardless of the weight of the opponents.

The Jiu Jitsu Gi is the formal uniform used when training and fighting Jiu Jitsu. Again, it is very similar to that of Judo, but the legs and arms are slightly less loose. Traditionally the Jiu Jitsu Gi must be warn for all training sessions, and although no Gi is allowed by some, when fighting in tournaments, it is compulsory.

Ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, again follows a similar pattern to those of both Judo and Taekwondo, the black belt being the highest and much respected ranking. Depending on commitment levels, it can take up to or more than ten years to obtain the black belt. Bjj Belts are categorized into junior and senior, seniors starting at the age of 16.

Like its' counterparts, Judo and Taekwondo, it is encouraged from a very early age, being both a healthy practice, as well as a method of learning both self defense and self discipline. From its' development in the early twentieth century, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become a very popular and well practiced sport, holding many competitions worldwide, as well as at local levels.

The main techniques for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, that stand it apart from its' ancestor Judo, are the techniques of joint locks, choke holds, and submission holds. These techniques show the individual that they do not need to be scared of an enemy or opponent who is bigger, or stronger than themselves, in one clean move, they can have their opponent immobilized on the ground.

It is important that all youngsters learn self defense in todays society, but also it is of explicit importance that their knowledge is not abused. In learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the individual also builds character and self control, making them a well rounded person, able to use their knowledge in the correct situations. It is often argued if the Brazilian art of Jiu Jitsu came from the Japanese art of judo, or that of Japanese Jiu Jitsu, but from either or both of the above, has developed a worldwide recognized martial art and combat sport.

What Makes a Quality Jiu Jitsu Gi - By: shakib nassiri.

You need to buy Jiu Jitsu Gi while you undergo training under an instructor. Buying Bjj Gi should be a good investment too. You should make the investment in such a manner that it lasts long. You should invest in quality Bjj Kimonos. What makes a quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi is a million dollar question.

A quality Bjj Gi is the one that gives you flexibility to your movements when you wear it. You should feel very comfortable inside the Gi. You should never feel any sense of discomfort when you wear the Jiu Jitsu Gi. Then only you can call it a quality Bjj Gi. The Bjj Gi as you know comprises of a top and a pants. The top is the more important in the sense that it is made of fabric in such way that the opponent does not find it too difficult to grip you. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is all about grappling and rolling. Hence the fabric used in the making of the Gi should be good enough to withstand the friction caused by rolling on the ground and the firm grips of the opponent.

The top is usually classified as single weave, double weave and gold weave. Each weave has a certain amount of thickness about it. Thus the Jiu Jitsu jacket or the top with a single weave is a delicate and a thin wear that gives ample room for the opponent to grip you. It is the kind of top normally preferred by the Jiu Jitsu exponents too during combats. The single weave Jiu Jitsu Gi is easy to wash and is considered a quality Bjj Gi. The double weave jacket is thicker than the single weave jacket in the sense that more fabric is used in its making. Its thickness would make it difficult for the opponent to grapple you with ease. The double weave jacket is also preferred by the exponents of the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The reason why it is preferred to the single weave jacket at times is that it is considered more durable due to its thickness. It is considered long lasting but at the same time it is not easy to wash the double weave jacket.

There is another type of jacket called the gold weave jacket. It is neither thick nor thin but is a quality Jiu Jitsu Gi. It is a special kind of Gjj Gi. It is interesting to note that all the types of Bjj Kimonos discussed above are allowed in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. A quality Jiu Jitsu Gi should cause no harm to your skin or the body when worn. If you find the Gi tight on your body or causing scratches on the body due to roughness in the making, then you should change the Gi with a new and lighter one. A good Bjj Gi is available for an affordable price anywhere between $75 and $200. Remember all you need is a quality Bjj Gi.

How a Bjj Gi is Made - By: shakib nassiri.

As an enthusiast of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you would be interested to know how a Bjj Gi is made. It would be an added advantage for you if you know the composition of your Bjj Kimonos. You know that your Jiu Jitsu Gi comprises of the top or the jacket and the pants. Both of them are made of cotton. Cotton is the fabric material used in the making of Brazilian jiu jitsu Gi. This is because cotton would allow air to pass quite easily. You would feel comfortable inside your Jiu Jitsu Gi if it is made of cotton.

Cotton is understood to provide ventilation to your fitting. Therefore make sure to buy your first Bjj Gi made of cotton. The prices are also affordable in the sense that you can purchase some good Bjj Kimonos for as low as $75. They are sold between $75 and $200. You would get Bjj Gi for even a lower price says $45, but the problem with them is that they don’t last long. They are not durable. Hence go for a cotton-made Jiu Jitsu Gi at affordable prices. Such a kind of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi would last long.

The making of the jacket is given more importance in Bjj Gi. This is because it is the jacket your opponent grapples you and makes you to submit to score a victory. Hence ensure that you go for the right kind of jacket that provides you with the grip you need during combats. Basically there are three kinds of jackets that are sold in sporting goods stores. They are the single weave jacket; double weave jacket and the gold weave jacket. The single weave jacket as the name itself suggests would be light in weight and comfortably worn due to its lightness. These jackets come in two popular colors, namely, white and blue. You would also find the black and the red color in some stores. International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions recognize white blue colors.

The second type of jacket called the double weave jacket is made of fabric that contributes to the thickness of the Bjj Gi. Brazilian Jiu jitsu Gi that is double weave in character is heavier than the single weave jacket. You would feel the heaviness when you wear it and your opponent may not get sufficient grip over your jacket during combat. Though the double weave jacket is also made of 100% cotton, its thickness may have a few disadvantages as well. Its greatest advantage is its durability. It is more durable than the first variety of single weave. The third variety of the Bjj Kimonos is what is called the gold weave Gi. It is also made of cotton. It is neither thick nor thin. Another interesting fact about the making of the Jiu Jitsu Gi is that the collar, considered very important part in the jacket is often stuffed with rubber to make the act of grappling easy for the opponent.
