The Harms of Greenhouse Effect

Stop Pollution. Help Save the World by Not Using Electricity from Fossil Fuel - By: Clay Wesley Floyd

Many electric companies and other electricity suppliers have been using fossil fuels as a means in producing electricity. This form of energy is a natural source but is now facing impending depletion as this source of energy is not a renewable kind. Maybe not now but it is still bound to happen. Fossil fuels are found and produced from deteriorated living organisms such as plants and animals from the years that have passed as far as the discovery of production of electricity from fossil fuels. Natural gas, coal and petroleum oil are the three forms of energy that can be harvested from these fuels. These energies are easy to extract, costs only a little amount of money and are very available anytime but for about 60 years only. With that said, a new energy source that is both renewable and efficient must be used for producing electricity in case fossil fuels are no longer available.

The kinds of energies that are harvested from fossil fuels are able to provide us with electricity that is used by appliances among other things that can be found in a household. Two of the most produced product from these fuels is electricity and gasoline. Another product from fossil fuels is crude oil but the fact that they cannot be produced with the use of synthetic materials, this kind of product is a non renewable form of energy. Companies such as gas stations, anywhere in the world, runs their business by selling petroleum oil and gas that is used to make any transportation vehicle run, except for the electric type ones. The fact that gas and crude oil are products that are harnessed from fossil fuel, which is a non-renewable form of energy and is soon to be depleted in the future; another alternative must be used in order to counteract the imminent problem that may happen in the future.

Ever since the industrial age, fossil fuels have brought us many benefits and have proven its efficiency in helping the industrialization of our planet. The problem is, by seeing too much advantage from the products of fossil fuels that are used everyday, the fact that this form of energy faces depletion has been overlooked. Additionally, the use of this form of energy contributes to pollution. From the deadly smokes that come from factories and vehicles, acid rains and other global issues have arisen.

Many environmentalists have been teaching schools, companies and other people in public as to how to save our planet from the dangers that it faces now. Air pollution and water pollution has been a problem since hazardous smokes and fluids are thrown to the sea and emitted from ships. The government too has been doing their part by apprehending offenders that just makes our environment’s situation worst.

The Harms of Greenhouse Effect - By: Chenxia Wang

Greenhouse effect is mainly caused by excessive burning of coal, petroleum and natural gas, as well as the large number of exhaust emissions in modern industrial society. After being burnt, these fuels will release a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which will then lead to greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse effect brings a lot of harms to human world, mainly as follows:
First of all, it leads to the change of the climate and causes global warming. The assessment report from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that, the global average temperature on the surface of the earth will increase by 1.4 to 5.8 degrees in 2100.

Secondly, it increases plant diseases and insect pests on the earth. Global warming can cause deadly virus to threaten human life. Recently, American scientists sound a warming: because of the melting of Arctic ice caused by global warming, the deadly virus which has been frozen for more than hundreds of thousands of years may become alive again. This will lead to global panic of epidemic, and cause serious threat to human life. At the moment, human beings have no resistance to these protovirus.

Thirdly, it also causes the rising of sea level. If global warming is occurring, there are two processes will lead to the rising of sea level. The first process if is that the seawater is heated and expanded and then it causes the rising of sea level. The second process is the melting of glaciers and ice on Greenland and Antarctic increases the water in the ocean. It is expected that from 1900 to 2100, the global average sea level will rise about 0.09 to 0.88 meter.

What's more, there are also some other harmful impacts caused by greenhouse effect. For example, it will increase storms in the ocean, cause the drought of land, increase the desertification area, and so on. Human activities and the nature will also release out other gases which may cause greenhouse effect. These gases include: chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), methane, low-altitude ozone, and nitrogen oxide gases.

Then what we should do to eliminate the harms caused by greenhouse effect? In order to reduce the excessive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, on the one hand, people need to conserve electricity as much as possible, and drive car as less as possible. On the other hand, we should protect the forests and oceans. In addition, we can also carry out the afforestation work, reduce the use of disposable wooden chopsticks, save paper, etc., so as to reduce the carbon dioxide in the air and help slow down the greenhouse effect.

Carbon Pollution cuts in 2010, due to Recession – Kevin Chinnock’s review - By: KevinChin

Can you guess what only benefit the world gained in the recent economic recession? It is hard to guess. The answer is “Cuts in carbon pollution”. It is measured that Carbon dioxide pollution cut down in the last year and first time in this decade.
But the sad news is, it didn’t last long and the drop is not as much as we expected.
We know two main reasons of Carbon pollutions are, Airplanes and vehicles generate green house gases and burning fossil to fuel power factories. The green house gases are warming the world. But in that recession period many factories were shut down and also people didn’t fly or drive as much they did earlier. This is the reason for dropping the emission rate about 1.3% comparing to year 2008-2009. (This statistics published in Sunday in the Journal Nature Geoscience.
Study lead author Pierre Friedlingstein (University of Exeter in England) said there is a close link between pollution and gross domestic product in recent decades. The only good part of the recession period is that it reduced emissions.
The Energy Department of United States said the emission dropped 7% in U.S. in 2009 and the three main reasons behind it are slightly better energy efficiency, the slowing economy and cleaner energy.
In 2009 the whole world produced 34 billion tons (nearly 31 billion metric tons) of carbon dioxide. Comparing to 2008 it has dropped 453 million tons – and this amount is equal to U.S. emits in about 26 days.
The last time the world witnessed the carbon dioxide pollution dropped world wide was in 1999. According to Energy Department's Oak Ridge National Lab report it was the biggest drop since 1992. Despite the last years improvement in “carbon dioxide pollution” the overall carbon emission increased 25% comparing to 2000 which is not at all impressive.
With the recovery process from the recession period the Carbon pollution is began to rise this year and the experts fearing that it will set a record in 2010.
Friedlingstein said, he forecasting of the last year said that the carbon dioxide pollution will drop 3% from 2009. That forecast was based on GDP projections from the IMF. But the recovery process performed more than expected and as a consequence the developing country produced more carbon dioxide that expected.
Developing countries don’t use energy as efficiently as the developed countries do and these developing countries were less affected by the recession capering to developed countries.
According to study in this recovery period Chinna increased 8% of carbon pollution from 2008-2009. India’s increased rate is 6%.
In 1990’s developed countries produced 65% of carbon dioxide said by the study co-author Gregg Marland of the Oak Ridge National Lab. Now this percentage is less than 43% because those developed countries cut 10 % of emission while the developing countries almost double their overall emission.
Friedlingstein said, one good news is that the carbon dioxide emission from the destruction of forest is decreasing considerably.
Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist of University of Victoria said it seems that our planate will fail to reach the goal set by the international negotiations in Copenhagen last year “Limiting the global warming to a 3.6 degree (2 degree Celsius) temperature increase since industrialization.
According to the National Climatic Data Center it is revealed from the last 10 months study that 2010 is tied for the hottest year in 131 years.
